Melbourne is known as the sports capital of Australia -- with sports of every type being played at all kinds of levels, from international to local, there is every opportunity to watch sports and to participate.

Melbourne is home to the Australian Tennis Open, one of the four Grand Slam tournaments, international golf tournaments, the Australian Grand Prix, a round of the Moto GP championship, the Australian Football League (Australian football -- visitors are amazed at the spectacle), two of the great international horse races, the Melbourne Cup and the Caulfield Cup, and a score of other major sporting events.

The visitor can see or participate in a wide range of individual and team sports. Golf, tennis, cricket, athletics, lawn bowls, bowling, horse riding, road cycling, Australian football, soccer, netball, basketball and swimming are just a sample.

The yacht and sailing clubs hold frequent intra-club and inter-club races on the Bay.
